A Man Who Loves His Home

I wait for you
In the grassland
Where small lilies bloom.
On the corners of the field,
The rainbow shows up.
小百合さく 小草がなかに 君まてば  野末にほいて 虹あらはれぬ
~Yosano Akiko Tanka Poem (1878-1942)

Who loves the rain
    And loves his home,
And looks on life with quiet eyes,
     Him will I follow through the storm;
     And at his hearth-fire keep me warm;
Nor hell nor heaven shall that soul surprise,
     Who loves the rain,
     And loves his home,
And looks on life with quiet eyes.

~Frances Shaw, “Who loves the rain” from Look To the Rainbow

For Dan’s 70th birthday…

In this journey together,
we inhabit each other,
however long may be the road we travel;
you have become the air I breathe,
refreshing, renewing, restoring~~
you are that necessary to me,
and that beloved.

Each year, as we grow older together:
grayer, softer, gentler
with ourselves,
each other,
and the world.

I pause,
on this day you were born,
to thank God yet again
for bringing you to earth
so we could meet,
raise our three amazing children,
and now our grandchildren,
walking life together
with faith and hope and dreams.

It was your quiet brown eyes I trusted first
and just knew
I’d follow you anywhere
and I have…

  1. Thanks so much Emily. Your words expressed exactly how I feel for my husband Garry. He is 72 in Sept. We have been together for 44 years and have 4 children and 11 grandchildren & great grandchild.  Garry is such a dear sweet gift of God, as your husband seems to be for you. I love the line “we inhabit each other” – I know that shared space of being.I also love that you are growing softer and gentler together. I am finding this happening with us as well. It is my prayer to soften more and more, so that love will always win.  Happy birthday to Dan!!

  2. Well aren’t we a bunch of blessed women! I, as well, adore my husband. We met when my daughter and his son fell in love and got married. We were married 8 months later. That was almost 15 years ago. God is indeed good!! Happy Birthday Dan!!!

  3. Such a lovely tribute. Thoughts I have had as well for the time Bob and I had together–55 years of marriage and over 9 of dating.

  4. Emily – this was beautiful! I shared it with my husband who just celebrated his 73rd birthday a few months ago.

    Great photos!
