Beside the Fire

I sit beside the fire and think
Of all that I have seen
Of meadow flowers and butterflies
In summers that have been

Of yellow leaves and gossamer
In autumns that there were
With morning mist and silver sun
And wind upon my hair

I sit beside the fire and think
Of how the world will be
When winter comes without a spring
That I shall ever see

For still there are so many things
That I have never seen
In every wood in every spring
There is a different green

I sit beside the fire and think
Of people long ago
And people that will see a world
That I shall never know

But all the while I sit and think
Of times there were before
I listen for returning feet
And voices at the door

  1. I love this, Emily. I think I need to dig into some Tolkein!! I’m particularly struck by his noting that every spring brings a new green. In my visual art, greens are my pertetual challenge; many years ago, I stopped using pure greens out of the tube – I either mix in an alloy color or do my own green from scratch, in which I’m subject to use any of my blues and any of my yellows plus appropriate alloys. Thank you for sharing; hope the winter isn’t too harsh on y’all – we’re having some cold but quite a few highs in the 60s and 70s!! We finished the year ten inches under normal rain fall, but have had a good bit of rain lately.
