Once the Weather Warms

barnnov

As a child, my father helped me dig
a square of dense red clay, mark off rows
where zinnias would grow,
and radishes and tender spinach leaves.
He’d stand with me each night
as daylight drained away
to talk about our crops leaning on his hoe
as I would practice leaning so on mine.

Years later now in my big garden plot,
the soggy remnant stems of plants
flopped over several months ago,
the ground is cold, the berries gone,
the stakes like hungry sentries
stand guarding empty graves. And still
I hear his voice asking what I think
would best be planted once the weather warms.

  1. Each fall I think I am done gardening … it is too much work … but by mid winter I am thinking about the seeds I saved and wondering if I should order some new ones from the catologs that come in the mail …. I forget all about the work and the time it takes and remember the sweet smell of fresh tomatoes on the vine instead . I remember the joy in pulling up the perfect shaped beets and the funny shaped carrots that grew a little too close to each other … my sunflowers stalks standing guard over the berry vines that are sleeping covered with snow and ice and fog … yes I will be digging in the dirt again as soon as the ground is soft … Peggy in eastern Wash.

  2. My dear husband is a master gardener. Humble as he is, he doesn’t think of himself as such. In the last few days, we have prepared our farm for 40 more walnut trees, and see the buds already pushing out on our fruit and almond trees; a reminder that soon we’ll be turning the soil to get our garlic in. And once the ground dries enough, we’ll be discing the soil of the grasses and weeds so they don’t suck the moisture away from the trees that we dryfarm.
My daughter asked Eli once, “How can you face pruning all of your 2,000+ trees?” Julie said she’ll never forget his reply, “Just one tree at a time.”
    blessings to you emily,
