Places in the Heart

frost1411

Man has places in his heart which do not yet exist,
and into them enters suffering,
in order that they may have existence.
~
Leon Bloy

I see these new heart chambers forming every day.
Spaces filling overwhelmed as if water frozen,
with hurt
and loss
and despair.
So I try
to help patients let go of
their suffering,
let it pass, let its ice melt down,
allow it to pass through,
forgiving, forgiven,
their hearts changed
by a grace
flowing warm
from new found gratitude.

  1. A beautiful and wise comment on the suffering of young people. I hope their hearts will be lifted by their trials. Lives to be lived going up like a balloon, not weighed down by grief. The resiliency of the young seems to be wearing thin too soon in our modern world.

  2. Emily,
Thank God (literally) that your young adult patients have you to ‘medicate’ them with your wisdom and genuine compassion.

Having three grandchildren (ages 31,30,23) I have first-hand knowledge of some of the nearly overwhelming problems that confront them on a daily basis. Theirs is not the same world (society) that we knew at that age. They face debilitating uncertainty and insecurities — the result of immoral, selfish adult leadership at all levels; disappearing career prospects; mounting student loan debt; hypocrisy among all religions; an environment that is crumbling over them and beneath their fee ;mass genocide; war, war, and more wars. We have always said that our children represent our future. Now, we must ask ourselves what kind of a future are we leaving for them?

Thank you Emily. We need all the fingers in the dike that we can get!
