“Assured of your salvation by the unique grace of our Lord Jesus Christ” is the heartbeat of the gospel, joyful liberation from fear of the Final Outcome, a summons to self-acceptance, and freedom for a life of compassion toward others.”

  1. It was good to see your post and Brennan Manning’s quote. I had not read anything about his stroke and other recent medical problems so I was shocked to learn that he had died.
I learned of Brennan from a friend years ago and have since read three of his books. The last one, The Rabbi’s Heartbeat, I just finished during the second week of Lent.
This is one of my favorite quotes from it.:
“I knew there was only one place to go.
I sank down into the center of my soul, grew still,
and listened to the Rabbi’s heartbeat.”

If Brennan achieved anything in his sad and often tortuous earthly journey, his book, The Ragamuffin Gospel will always stand as a beautiful testament to his ability to introduce us to the concept of a God who meets us where we are, who loves us unconditionally, who has given us a Gospel of Grace, and second chances.

As soon as I read today’s post, I looked up the three quotes I had written in another of my favorite Brennan books, Abba’s Child:
“In love’s service, only wounded soldiers can serve.”

“The unwounded life bears no resemblance to the Rabbi.”

“Jesus says, ‘Acknowledge and accept who I want to be for you:
a Savior of boundless compassion, infinite patience, unbearable
forgiveness, and love that keeps no score of wrongs.
Quit projecting onto Me your own feelings about yourself.
At this moment your life is a bruised reed and I will not crush it,
a smoldering wick and I will not quench it.
You are in a safe place.'”

Yes, dear loving Brennan, you are indeed in a safe place. You have fallen back into Abba’s arms where you have always wanted to be.
We will miss you. We thank you for the treasures that you have left for us.
