Indeed, Dear Emily. The most frequent comment about and to me that I hear is the observation that it doesn’t take a lot to entertain me. Some say it as a compliment, as in “I love the way you can get excited about things most people don’t even see,” while others send derision along, as in, “You like THAT? I would think you’d have better taste.”
Ah, there’s the hitch: taste is not a better-or-worse quality; I simply have BROAD tastes, grounded in a profound appreciation for the Creation, the Creator, and the very act of creativity. My advocacy of The Arts in the public school curriculum is a direct by-product of that appreciation, understanding that the various disciplines we now collectively call The Arts evolved from the need of more than a verbal language for communication. We were intended by The Creator to be unique, so any combination of skills, disciplines, interests, inclinations, proclivities, and gifts (note the absence of the word “talent”) contribute to who each of us is. The music business taught me a certain disdain for vertical scales, as “the top” of a chart or graph is as high as one can go, whereas horizontal perceptions enbable expansion and inclusion just as far as we can comprehend. Charts and lists have a function, but if they dominate our perception, we miss a lot of wonderful, glorious experiences, like my connecting with you those several years back. I joined that group purely to be supportive of the friend who invited me, not suspecting that you and Kim Kelly were in the path of that expansion!! Wow!!
