Given the Choice

I go to the mountain side
of the house to cut saplings,
and clear a view to snow
on the mountain. But when I look up,
saw in hand, I see a nest clutched in
the uppermost branches.
I don’t cut that one.
I don’t cut the others either.
Suddenly, in every tree,
an unseen nest
where a mountain
would be.
~Tess Gallagher “Choices”

Such tenderness,
such recognition of the other,
to save the nest
and all future potential nests
rather than a clear cut stripping
for the sake of unimpeded world view,
when the freedom of a mountain backdrop
is sacrificed–

such tenderness
when the right to choose can only mean
choosing to do right.

  1. There is much to ponder here, Emily – in Gallagher’s poem and in your apt comment.
Both profoundly recognize that we have an innate moral responsibility to recognize and to value the
existence and sacredness of life in ALL its forms. We are not the Creator of human life
nor of the beautiful natural environment with which we have been gifted. Both are gifts from the Creater.
We are merely temporary caretakers and nurturers until the ‘gifts’ will ultimately return to the Creator.
We do not have the right to eradicate either for the sake of convenience or practicality.
