An Oath of Loyalty to Life

needles

It is…the refusal to take the oath of loyalty to life…
The man who kills a man kills a man.

The man who kills himself kills all men.
As far as he is concerned, he wipes out the world.
~ G.K. Chesterton

Suicide rates globally have climbed 60% in the past forty years,
particularly in developed countries.
Based on the distress of the patients I see every day,
the easy contemplation of suicide,
if only a passive “I wish I were dead”,
there will be no slowing of this trend.

…when there is no sense of loyalty to life, as stressful and messy as it can be,
…when there is no honoring of the holiness of the created being,
…when there is no resistance to the buffeting winds of life,
only a toppling over, taking out everything and everyone in the way,
…the world is wiped out, all people killed in one act of self-murder.

  1. A 60% increase…how sad. Thirty two years ago I had a professional interest in the few suicides I had heard about; I thought only a few were too many. I encountered colleagues who thought it an amusing interest. My subsequent research strongly indicated a self-esteem issue. Families are stressed, children are not heard, spiritual values are so often neglected…

  2. Because it is so difficult to accurately predict when people are actually at risk for committing suicide, it is generally appropriate to treat all instances of suicidality as real and serious threats, and to intervene every time. The risk of intervening every time, however, is that bipolar patients cease to talk about their suicidal thoughts after several false alarms, because they no longer want to be shuffled off to the hospital. Many patients will have ongoing low-level suicidal thoughts for long periods of time and not be in acute danger of acting on them. On the other hand, it is always possible for patients to impulsively act on long-standing suicidal thoughts if they happen to be triggered by particularly disturbing events or at an impulsive point in their mood cycle. The risk for bipolar suicide is highest when patients are in an impulsive state. Family members and friends have to use careful and conservative judgment when deciding whether to call in the professionals so as to balance patients’ safety against damage to their relationships with patients if suicidal ideation should turn out to be a false alarm. When there is any doubt as to the seriousness of the suicidal threat, it is best to err on the side of safety and to call in the professionals.

  3. Don’t accept it if someone tells you, “That’s not enough to be suicidal about.” There are many kinds of pain that may lead to suicide. Whether or not the pain is bearable may differ from person to person. What might be bearable to someone else, may not be bearable to you. The point at which the pain becomes unbearable depends on what kinds of coping resources you have. Individuals vary greatly in their capacity to withstand pain.
