A Canticle for Advent: Our Hearts Raise

wlc32013
wlc52013Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o’er the plain
and the mountains in reply
echoing their glorious strain.

    • Refrain:
      Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
      Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heav’nly song

Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ Whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

See Him in a manger laid,
Whom the choirs of angels praise;
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
While our hearts in love we raise.

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
Luke 24:32

Our hearts are raised, lifted by the love of a God who comes into our arms to be rocked and fed, and who dies with His arms outstretched in invitation to salvation.
Our hearts burn within us at the knowledge of who He is,  what it means that He has walked among us, and what that means for eternity.
