Listening to Lent — Unchanging Love

wwuheather

If thou but trust in God to guide thee,
and hope in God through all thy ways,
God will give strength, what e’er betide thee,
to bear thee through the evil days.
Who trusts in God’s unchanging love
builds on the rock that naught can move.

Only be still, and wait God’s leisure
in cheerful hope, with heart content
To take what e’er thy Maker’s pleasure
and all discerning love hath sent;
We know our inmost wants are known,
for we are called to be God’s own.

Sing, pray, and keep God’s ways unswerving;
so do thine own part faithfully,
And trust God’s word; though undeserving,
thou yet shalt find it true for thee.
God never yet forsook at need the soul
that trusted God in-deed.
~Georg Neumark

Trust~
a challenge for us
who are so volatile, so transient and fleeting,
to imagine an unchanging love
that lasts
through the worst storms and violent upheavals.

He of strength and hope
loves us~~
the weak, the broken, the undeserving.
He causes us to burst into bloom.

  1. You are so right, Emily. Trust IS a challenge for us. It IS especially difficult for us with our finite minds to fully comprehend and appreciate the concept of ‘unchanging love.’ We humans tend to be fickle and contrary in our relationships. We think that we ‘see’ and understand, but we do not always.

    From my experience, Trust has to be earned. Or, in the case of our religious experiences and beliefs, we seem to gain it only when we fall flat on our faces — with nowhere to turn, when no one seems totally present to us in our need, in our anguish. It is much more difficult, I think, when we believe that we are self-sufficient and can handle any situation. Then when we come face-to-face with reality and hit bottom we realize that we are not sufficient unto ourselves, that we do need help far beyond our own capabilities, or the help of others to whom we feel close. If we are fortunate, if we just listen to that still whispering voice within us we will cry out to The One who always has been and always will be there for us — the One who will never leave us ‘orphans,’ as Jesus said. It is in accepting His Grace and Mercy, with an attitude of sincere humility, that we will learn to TRUST – to crawl beneath the wings of our Protector. and ask Him to keep us always in His care.

    Your Lenten meditations continue to be so helpful, Emily. At this juncture of my life and still in the throes of a very deep hurt, I need them more than you could ever know. Thank you.
