Fallen At Last

Things: simply lasting, then
failing to last: water, a blue heron’s
eye, and the light passing
between them: into light all things
must fall, glad at last to have fallen.
~Jane Kenyon, “Things”

Things we think last don’t.
Light passes between things and us,
a pathway illuminated to something lasting.
We will follow,
falling, failing to last
until lifted at last.
Gladly we become light
ourselves.

  1. I don’t know if this is a coincidence or not, but I had just finished reading Fr. Richard Rohr’s Meditation for today just before I read your posting, Emily. Both seemed to resonate with each other. Here’s an edited version of Rohr’s posting:

“To span the infinite gap between the Divine and the human, God’s agenda is to plant a little bit of God, the Holy Spirit, right inside of us! (Jer 31:31-34; John 14::16ff)….replacing our ‘heart of stone with a heart of flesh’ (Ez 36:25-26)….It is God doing the loving, in and through us, back to God, toward our neighbor and enemy alike, and even toward the sad and broken parts of ourselves….”

Here is the quote from John 14:16-17:
“…I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept,
because it remains with you, and will be in you.” (NAB rev.)

  2. I agree, Alice, there is a similar theme going here. Where would we be without the light of God’s love?
