The Petals in Your Pocket

An annual rerun of this poem (and of course “It’s a Wonderful Life”)!

“ZuZu’s Petals”
~Lessons from “It’s a Wonderful Life”~

Our children had to be convinced
Watching black and white holiday movies
Was worthwhile~
This old tale and its characters
Caught them up right away
From steadfast George Bailey
to evil Mr. Potter-
They resonate in our hearts.

What surprised me most
Was our sons’ response to Donna Reed’s Mary:
~where can we find one like her?
Her loyalty and love unequaled,
Never wavering…

I want to be like her for you.
When things go sour
I won’t forget what brought us together
In the first place.
I’m warmth in the middle-of-the-night storm
When you need shelter.
I’m ZuZu’s petals in your pocket
When you are trying to find your way back home.

  1. I recall this film well — along with the era that engendered it and others like it. Brings back many bittersweet memories for my (85-y.o.) generation – a time to which we can never return because I think that we have lost much of our innocence since then. Our present generation of children and young adults need to view this film and others of that genre and that era, and to listen to the stories (values, moral road map) that are passed on to us from relatives from earlier times. Things were not always ideal or perfect, with no sorrows, troubles, wounds of hatred and selfishness that we humans inflict upon each other at times. Our temporary earthly existence (with our God-given gift of Free Will) does not guarantee our perfection. That is promised us later when we enter into the fullness of God’s Kingdom that He has prepared for us. It is never too late, His Spirit exists within us – to show us the Way. He is waiting – – to be asked….

Thank you, Emily, for the most welcome rerun.
