Every Green Moment

Just past dawn, the sun stands
with its heavy red head
in a black stanchion of trees,
waiting for someone to come
with his bucket
for the foamy white light,
and then a long day in the pasture.
I too spend my days grazing,
feasting on every green moment
till darkness calls,
and with the others
I walk away into the night,
swinging the little tin bell
of my name.
~Ted Kooser “A Birthday Poem”

Right now
all is green~
every square inch
and every misty mythical moment.

So I feast while I can,
knowing soon the darkness descends
and I too am called
to come home,
the bells I bear
swinging and ringing.

  1. O, my dear Emily,
You don’t get off that easily — belling yourself into the sunset anytime soon (don’t like that word ‘darkness – too final).
I refuse to believe that you are there yet, babe!
Statistically, you’re in your ‘prime.’ Recall what Frost said about ‘promises to keep and miles to go….’
Enjoy the occasional ‘feasts’ here. Not to compare with the ‘feast’ that awaits us certainly, but still the ones here will
have prepared us and made the earthly journey, with all its pitfalls, beautiful, memorable, because it, too, has been His gift to us…..
Don’t forget, also, Emily, that you are our collective muse, the one who inspires us, helps us over a few humps with your faithful encouragement and understanding (not to mention, ‘telling it like it is.’)

  2. So sweet for sure. Yesterday, I spent the whole day weeding and raking, as a schoolmate of mine with his 2 sons and 2 of his grandsons split almond wood from one of the two huge wood piles that Eli and I had cut 5 years ago. Tony and his sons hauled 5 very full dump trailer loads to their farm……storing my share at their place until I’m settled at my new home on 1.1 acres. Three generations, laughing eating lunch together, even finding a baby bunny to now raise. And I could hear “the best is yet to come.” Thanks be to God.

  3. I can start moving into the new place June 15th. Bittersweet, but I know God has provided this place for me. It’s 1.1 acre so it’s legal for Scharly too.
