A Mourne Kind of Morning

mournemountains1

I have seen landscapes [in the Mourne Mountains] which, under a particular light, made me feel that at any moment a giant might raise his head over the next ridge.
~C.S. Lewis

The Mournes have a mystical quality to them, bewitching the traveler and inspiring C.S. Lewis as a child growing up near here to create Narnia as an adult.

We have seen these mountains silhouetted in the distance, and have driven through them, descending into coastal villages surrounded by miles and miles of stone fences checker boarding the farmland.

We need to always keep wonder close at hand and never cease to wonder at the fairy tales in our own back yard.

  1. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful, Emily.
What a visual treat — for the eyes and for the soul.
I always thought that the name of the Mourns had an association with the word ‘mourning.’ Not true, of course. I don’t know anything about the Irish (Gaelic) language. Except that the British tried to erase it from the Irish culture at one time. I did a little background search about the mountains. Each one has a different name. One of them is called “Pollaphuca” that means “hole of the fairies and sprites.
The soft rounded peaks remind me of our own Catskill Mountains which begin about 30 miles south of Albany.

Unfortunately, my ancestors never set foot in Northern Ireland so they never experienced its beauty. So much hatred in that little, spectacularly beautiful country. It still exists in many places and for many people. Irish memories are long!

The pasture lands in your pictures look so trim and perfect. You and Dan must feel ‘at home’ here.I wonder if you visited the graveyards to look at the dates on the headstones. . In the eastern U.S. coastal areas there are many headstones from the 17th Century. I would think that, in Ireland, they would be dated much earlier. I’d be curious to know how far back the dating is.
