Brooding Over the Bent World

Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings

~Gerard Manley Hopkins from “God’s Grandeur”

It began so plainly this morning, building up over 45 minutes to a burst of burning clouds and settling back down to a mere halo on Mt. Baker’s northern shoulder.

Surely God’s grandeur cannot be more evident than when His spirit broods over us, bent and broken as we are, igniting the needed flame under us, giving us what we need when we need it.

We can go on and so, we are assured all will be well.

  1. Today’s post is PERFECT, in your photos and your words! When I woke up and looked at the sky–I was amazed, and ran for my camera (phone)…and took a couple of good ones!

  2. (I agree with Wendy: the pics are especially appropriate for this day, this time, this ‘new beginning.’)

That ‘we can go on, assured that all will be well,’ is the fervent hope that we as a nation – and ALL of its citizens in particular, still harbor and are waiting for the end of the ever-escalating hatred, racism, and bitterness that has been our unending scourge for the past four years — in fact, for most of our history as a unique ‘Democracy.’

The cumulative open wounds and cruel divisions of this history remain deeply imbedded in our souls and national consciousness. Our hypocrisy is witnessed by other nations as the antithesis of a nation where we boast of our freedom and equality for ALL and compassion for those who, for no fault of their own, need our help to survive.

That HE, our peace-giving Lord of ALL peoples, is waiting to be included as part of our healing process – All we have to do is to reach out and invite Him to join with us and become part of the process. If we dare to assume that we can heal and recover without His help, we are indeed fools and will ultimately pay a terrible price if we fail to open our hearts and minds — to LOOK, to SEE, and to ACT together to heal our nation.
