The Color Shouted

After the keen still days of September, the October sun filled the world with mellow warmth…
The maple tree in front of the doorstep burned like a gigantic red torch.
The oaks along the roadway glowed yellow and bronze.
The fields stretched like a carpet of jewels, emerald and topaz and garnet.
Everywhere she walked the color shouted and sang around her…
In October any wonderful unexpected thing might be possible.
~Elizabeth George Speare from The Witch of Blackbird Pond

I wander, deafened by the shouts and songs of October color.  It is more than I can bear some mornings, knowing the stillness and silence that is to come.

  1. Yes, stillness and silence will come after this deluge of outrageous vibrant show of color has passed — to be followed by the colorless sameness of snow and the coldness and sometimes naked nothingness and barren sterility of the winter scene. But that, too, has a beauty all its own – a time to withdraw into our interior, that special sacred place where we are alone with Him – to recall and to appreciate the beauty with which He has just showered upon us — and to believe that it will return again in its time — just as He promised that He will.
