Listening to Lent — Sometimes We Fall

Weak and wounded sinner
Lost and left to die
O, raise your head, for love is passing by
Come to Jesus
Come to Jesus
Come to Jesus and live!

Now your burden’s lifted
And carried far away
And precious blood has washed away the stain, so
Sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus and live!

And like a newborn baby
Don’t be afraid to crawl
And remember when you walk
Sometimes we fall…so
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus and live!

Sometimes the way is lonely
And steep and filled with pain
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain, then
Cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus and live!

O, and when the love spills over
And music fills the night
And when you can’t contain your joy inside, then
Dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus and live!

And with your final heartbeat
Kiss the world goodbye
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory’s side, and
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus and live!
~Chris Rice

Sometimes we fall.
Sometimes we fall hard.
We don’t want to get back up
just to fail again.
But we must,
and we will.
We’re picked up,
dusted off,
and ready to try
another day.

  1. Emily, I have read and re-read Chris Tomlin’s lyrics and your reassuring comments several times today, each time finding something so true to our imperfect human condition, especially for one living in today’s post-Christian culture where so many are seeking the voice and the presence of God in their lives just to survive and to find a sense of hope in all of the godless madness in which we live.

Tomlin’s words, and your understanding comments, remind us that ‘falling’ (however one interprets this word) does not have to be the end for us, causing us to sink into depression and hopelessness. By asking for help from God and by accepting His loving mercy and grace, we are helped once again to rise up, fo acknowledge and learn from our mistakes, and to keep trying.

Thank you, Emily, for the beauty and holiness that you continue to show us. And thank you for the wonderful integration of such appropriate contemporary and traditional music.

  2. Thank you for just being so real .
As believers it is so comforting , encouraging , etc. , etc.
, to receive share trust and faith and yet share vulnerable moments as well ….which you do so , so gracefully . And always leaving us with your trust in Him , despite whatever . Not knowing the way we are to travel yet resting in His plan is a constant for us all . thanks for all the “leg ups” your blog provides !
    PEace & blessings,
