Here is the Mystery

Here is the mystery, the secret, one might almost say the cunning, of the deep love of God: that it is bound to draw on to itself the hatred and pain and shame and anger and bitterness and rejection of the world, but to draw all those things on to itself is precisely the means, chosen from all eternity by the generous, loving God, by which to rid his world of the evils which have resulted from human abuse of God-given freedom.
~N.T. Wright from The Crown and the Fire

Inundated by overwhelmingly bad news of the world,
blasted 24/7 from cable TV,
highlighted in rapidly changing headlines online,
tweeted real time to our pocket phones from every nook and cranny~

We cling to the mystery of His magnetism for our weaknesses and flaws.

He willingly pulls our evil onto Himself and out of us.
Hatred and pain and shame and anger and bitterness
disappear into the vortex of His love and beauty,
the dusty corners of our hearts vacuumed spotless.

We are let in on a secret, the mystery revealed:

He is not sullied by absorbing the dirty messes of our lives.
Instead, once we are safely within His depths, He washes us forever clean.

  1. Emily, What an extradordinarily healing reflection. You are a doctor to souls as well as to bodies. thank you yet again.

  2. Compelling, thoughtful, Emily. Jesus as a ‘Love Magnet.’ He who became Christ of the Universe — draws all that you cite, and more, to Himself — integrated with the crowd’s insults and betrayal, His bleeding wounds — the deeply embedded crown of thorns upon His head, the deep lash stripes and, finally, the lance piercing His side. He then freely offered that ‘gift’ of His sacrifice to all humanity. It is impossible for us at times not to ask ourselves: ‘What have I done to appreciate His gift’?

Thank you for your thoughts today, Emily. You continue to be pure gift to us. As just one of your many subscriber-readers, they help me to withstand and in any way that I can to fight against and repel that evil, The continuing escalation of greed, selfishness and the dissolution of basic human rights by questionable and possibly illegal presidential fiat and Congressional legally-imposed laws is waging internecine warfare against all citizens, but directed disproportionately against ‘the other’ among us, It is destroying our nation – turning citizen against citizen. It is further unraveling and making ineffective the basic democratic protections and moral codes upon which our young inexperienced nation was founded.
