My Heart in Hiding Stirred For a Bird

thank you to Kate Steensma of Steensma Dairy for these photos of young kestrel falcons

I caught this morning morning’s minion, king-
dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, – the achieve of, the mastery of the thing.

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermilion.
~Gerard Manley Hopkins “The Windhover – To Christ Our Lord”

We do indeed hold our hearts in hiding, trying to protect that tender core of who we are from being pierced and shredded by the slings and arrows of every day life.

Yet to live fully as we are created to live, we must fling ourselves into the open, wimpling wings spread, the wind holding us up hovering.

We take our chances, knowing the fall to come.  Our wounds shall be healed, even as they bleed.

There is no wonder of it.  So stirred.

Ah…  Ah, my dear.

  1. As painful as we fear it may be — and only our sweet loving Jesus knows how painful it is — at some point in our life WE must release the hidden pent up wounds (some perhaps still fresh and bleeding) ,the small hurts we felt had been forgotten long ago, the disappointments, the unmet expectations. If we fail to do this, to free our tethered soul that has become deadened by guilt, despair, — all the accumulated flotsam and detritus, including any early wounds that remain from our more deeply hidden ‘inner child’ experiences. Failing to act with courage and trust in our merciful, healing Lord to free our souls we will never know the fullness of the unbelievable joyful knowledge that He is and has been there with us, for us, all along. We have only to ask His help to take away all that is keeping us from what He has always wanted for us — living our life in His Spirit with every breath, in every moment of our lives….

  2. Thank you, dear Emily. We often seem to be on the same wave length – one more Gift from the Holy Spirit. You provide the gist, the seeds of the thought(s), the meat and potatoes main course; I just add a few ancillary side dishes to accompany the meal. Although I do not always mention it as I should, it is YOUR innate ability to dredge deeply into the magnificent talents and resources at your disposal, your often heartbreaking physician’s daily experiences, your stripped down basic trusting faith in God that make your blog a memorable source of wisdom — daily food from the stored food at Briarcroft.. What you believe, see, and feel is what you share so generously with your readers far and wide.
